About Tools & Equipment
The price difference between expensive hand tools and inexpensive hand tools can be very large. I have many Record Hand Planes which after several hours of work can work as beautifully as the far more expensive brands. The dvd shows me working on the large Jointer Number 7 to achieve a superb performance.

Stanley Hand Planes are of similar quality to Record and you can find these planes at most wood working shops. For the waterstones and eclipse honing guide you can also purchase these online at a large number of wood working shops. I have a link to the Japan Woodworker in the USA under the links section on the homepage. This store stocks lots of wonderful tools.

The Japanese Waterstones I am currently using are 800, 1200 and 6000 grit plus the Nagura. I will upgrade the 6000 grit stone to an 8000 grit stone when it is used.

My Tormek grinder is an old model 1200. I like this machine as it is very easy to use and very easy to keep the stone trued. The stone runs through water and wets the blade as it sharpens so the steel does not overheat. The grinder is used to hone the initial bevels. I have added a link under the Links section to the Tormek website.

The Lie-Nielson plane baldes are A2 steel. These are much harder than English steel and hold their edge for much longer. They are a good investment. I have a link to the L-N website. These blades are suitable for either Record or Stanley planes.

I also use a large piece of 'float glass' as a base for my waterstones when flattening and sharpening. I also use this glass to flatten the soles of planes.

I also recommend the Camelia Oil to protect your tools. This is also covered in the last section of the dvd.
